More than people from Roman Catholic institutions in the New York area gathered here today to discuss a subject rarely talked about openly - homosexuality among priests, nuns and religious brothers. An organizer of the one-day conference titled ''Our Lesbian and Gay Religious and Clergy'' likened the church to parents coming to terms with a child's homosexuality. The conference here, convened by an ad hoc committee of Catholics who minister to homosexuals, was careful to make the distinction between those in religious life who are sexually active and those who are not.
