The whale sighting happened right away, minutes into Day 1. Jon, Dave and I had just been dropped off on a remote Alaskan shoreline, an hour and a half by boat from the closest speck of a town. Jon was working as a sea-kayaking guide that summer in Glacier Bay National Park, and he had invited us up for a seven-day excursion during his week off.
If you need a quick check on what materials you will need for your build, check out my Bill of Materials table. Use the calculator below for more precise calculations, to estimate weight, and for designs not listed on the BOM table. Anyone building a strip-built boat from scratch eventually has to decide how much wood they need.
He likes to challenge himself with creative projects at home. I love the adventure and experience of canoe camping—packing food and camping gear into a canoe and paddling to a wilderness campsite. No motors are allowed in the park, fishing is great, and the solitude and scenery are addicting.
Hull form - The Cirrus has a single hard chine, Swede hull form. Generously curved chines respond quickly to leaned turns and aid in excellent handling performance and responsiveness. A pronounced rocker in the bow and a sharp V hull profile along the entire kayak give the Cirrus the superb directional stability. There is no hint of a self induced course deviation and the kayak follows a straight line even in low speed coasting.

Recently, Silbs asks. Meanwhile, I have been driving myself nuts while mulling over an issue around boat size and speed. For starters, we all agree that a longer boat all else being equal can go faster than a shorter one.
To do the calculation manually, the first thing you need to figure out is the total surface area of the boat to be covered by the strips. Notice how the strips engage into each other by the radius of the bead. This means that the effective area covered by the strip is not the 'original width' but the 'exposed width'.

I started building this kayak around the end of as a fun shop project -- partly for the experience of building using this technique, and partly to have a covered boat for rougher paddling conditions. Plus, I wanted a light boat that's easy to load up for a quick solo paddle. I've always been intrigued with skin-on-frame construction so I thought I'd give it a try.
