The YALSA Presidential Advisory Taskforce was recently brainstorming librarians that were out there in the trenches, working hard to support youth activism through community engagement. Their presentation was called From Socializing to Social Justice: Connecting teens to community through social narratives. They tackle youth activism head on in numerous ways, but the Woke Teen Forum in particular was truly inspiring.
Bring your questions about classes, schedules, sports, music groups, clubs, community service, lockers, homework, and whatever else you are wondering about high school! The morning and evening sessions will have the same format: attend whichever one is most convenient for you. Parents will have the opportunity to hear about current trends in youth substance use including vaping, marijuana, and alcohol ; review recent data; understand the science behind the developing brain and the impact of substances; and learn strategies for talking with their children. This will be an interactive session, and all are welcome.

PowerBack is our comprehensive dating abuse education and prevention program that addresses these statistics by giving high school students the "power back" to help themselves, their classmates or loved ones. There is no other program in our state that addresses this issue as comprehensively as we do in PowerBack. PowerBack has five components: Teen Forums are presented to the entire student body early in the school year; all students receive information and resources for support. At the end of the forum, there is a "call to action" where any student can sign up to become a PowerBack peer leader.
