This is a rare and stunning decorative piece, a plaster cast of a death mask made around Early death masks used to be taken directly from cadavers as a memento of the dead and also to be used to create portraits or sculptures of the deceased. During the 18th and 19th centuries death masks also took on the role of recording and identifying the deceased, a practice that was replaced by post-mortem photography. This is an exceptional example with very high detail, particularly with the skin texture and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.
