Within Christianitythere are a variety of views on sexual orientation and homosexuality. Even within a denomination, individuals and groups may hold different views and not all members of a denomination necessarily support their church's views on homosexuality. This article focuses on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, covering how the extent to which the Bible mentions the subject, whether or not it is condemned, and whether the various passages apply today, have become contentious topics.

Most Church statements that deal with homosexuality only refer to male homosexuality but the same principles can apply to lesbians. There are great divisions within the Christian community on this issue, with the Roman Catholic Church and some sections of the evangelical churches holding very similar views. Most Christian churches hold the position that you should 'Love the sinner, but hate the sin'.

Known as the Traditional Plan, the new policy includes penalties for breaking its rules and asks those who will not obey it to find another church. The Traditional Plan is designed to serve as a coherent United Methodist Church policy on LGBT clergy and their marriage practices after years of inconsistency among individual United Methodist churches, with some churches denouncing homosexuality as a sin and others embracing gay and lesbian clergy members.
